Due to lack of website traffic and funding, de Novo Designs will no longer be maintaining this web blog for "La Familia" updates. We will be creating a blog for the same purposes via Gmail in the weeks to come. Additionally, please note that we have changed our email address to denovo0521@gmail.com. We'll be in touch!!

We are SO excited to report that we seem to be in the midst of a revival here at Escuela Caribe! We just wrapped up our Fall Spiritual Retreat (daily games, unity oriented activities, praise and worship, a guest speaker to deliver the message, etc.) and had approximately 1/3 of our entire student body (12 or so) accept Christ as their Savior. This including the majority of those students on campus that were professed atheists up to this point. Two of those students (VERY firm atheists before retreat) will be returning home in the next several months. PRAISE GOD they are now covered in His blood and protected by His grace and mercy for eternity!

We write this update in tears as we are so overwhelmed by the blanket of glory that seems to be warming the hearts of students and staff campus-wide. In almost three years of service here with NHYM we have NEVER even remotely felt this sort of power amongst our community. God is truly on the move! It is one of the most incredible experiences we have ever been blessed enough to be a part of. This move of the Holy Spirit is undoubtedly a reminder from the Lord of His providence even in a time of financial hardships. Thank you all for your continued support for our ministry prayerfully and/or financially. Who knows, this may be another "Brownsville Revival" in the making!

Good Day to friends and family! We haven't written in a while, so I thought I would send a quick update…

We are now being hit by the 4th tropical storm/hurricane this year - we literally have been hit each week for the past 4 weeks by a different storm! Hurricane Ike is now starting to hit us on the north side of the island, about 3 hours away but we will feel part of Ike’s wrath as we will be getting rain and some wind. God has been very gracious to not only us here in Jarabacoa but also to most of the Dominican Republic – Haiti, on the other hand has taken the blunt of the storms and have suffered severe flooding not to mention injuries and death’s. The organization (MFI – Missionary Flight’s International) who fly’s in to the DR and Haiti who deliver’s our mail/packages has posted some pictures on their website. We realize that part’s of the US have also been hit by these storms, however Haiti does not have resources like the US – please be in prayer for the people who have lost friends and family, homes and the belongings that they (did) have.

Praise God! We have 1 baby that was born yesterday and another who will be born this Wednesday and another one in a month or so. We are a very close-nit community here at Escuela Caribe (it’s a love/hate relationship!) and are excited for new life and excited that we get to share in the many blessings that comes along with raising a child.

Brian and I are doing well – a little burnt out – but carrying on. Brian could really use your prayers - he has basically worked 2 jobs (Counseling Dept. Head and Counselor) for the past 6 months and is nearing the end of his rope! The ministry has hired another male counselor who will be arriving in approximately 10 day’s, who will then take over most of Brian’s student’s who he counsels. This is GOOD news!

A couple of months ago the ministry planted several hundred plants of coffee beans and they are ready to be harvested. This is the first time the ministry has done anything like this. We know a lot of you love coffee and would love to send you some – they would be whole beans, so you would need a grinder – if you are interested, please shoot us an email and we will see what we can do!

We now have 3 houses open here at Escuela Caribe – 2 boys and 1 girl’s house. This is good news, however the ministry is still operating month to month; we are $21,000 short per month. We are up from 32 students last fall to 47 currently, our break even is around 55. The ministry will now look at how to cut hours, salary or positions while increasing enrollment and raising funds. The next two months are crucial as we typically increase in students in Oct./Nov. as last year we enrolled 10 new students. We know there are many hurting teen’s and family’s that could use our help. We ask that you be in prayer for NHYM as God continues to show us just how much we need to rely on Him. We believe whole-heartedly in this ministry and program. We have seen lives changed as these teens learn about God’s grace, mercy and love for them. And not only that, but how God continues to grow us as staff. We tend to get a lot of young Christian’s who are on fire for God, but still need coaching.

OK – so this didn’t end up being a “quick update” – please forgive me, I guess I didn’t realize how much I wanted to say!! We thank all of you for your prayers and your contributions. With out you we know that Satan probably would have the best of us – but your prayers and words of encouragement help us get through the day!

Some of you may remember our mentioning "Chicho" to you in months past. Chicho had diabetes that had progressed to the point of needing regular medical care to assist his kidneys in functioning properly. To assist the family financially, Fi and I began making monthly contributions for insulin supplies, kidney treatments, etc. and received reports of the resulting improvements. Unfortunately, the joy of seeing him recover further will never be shared due to Chicho passing away this past week of severe kidney failure.

We regret not having the privledge of meeting Chicho as we chose to remain anonymous in our support but plan to continue tithing to his family as he was the main source of income for a family with few resources. We asked that you please be in prayer for the family during this difficult time. Pray that the Lord will provide for their every need throughout the grieving process so that they might grieve rather than constantly worry about finances, burial, food, etc. We are so thankful that all of you have come along side Fi and I in our times of need. We are so much more blessed than we realize! Thank you.

Good day La Fam! Happy belated 4th of July! First of all, we'd like to share with you how much we DEARLY miss ALL of you (probably triggered by 4th of July). We have been homesick more so than normal lately and would appreciate your prayers as we have been challenged in this area.

We recently returned from our annual trip to Pico Duarte with our students. We decided to take the week long trip with the girls this year and were SO blessed in that time. It was obvious to us that the Lord used our daily 7 hour hikes to connect with those we hiked with through many conversations on various topics. The Lord seemed to always find a way to show his face regardless of the discussion. Afterwards, many of the girls (some non-believers) shared that they felt drawn to the Lord through these experiences. Praise God! Please keep all of our students in your prayers as we continue to minster to them. We hope you enjoy all the pics we have uploaded to the site of our trip to Pico Duarte and our time on the island since arriving in March 2006. Below are some facts about Pico Duarte that you may find interesting...

  • Named in honor of Juan Pablo Duarte, one of the Dominican Republic's founding fathers.
Highest peak in all the Caribbean islands.
  • Tallest mountain in the America's outside of the Rockies and Andes.
  • First climbed in 1851 by the British consul, Sir Robert Hermann Schomburgk.
  • An East-facing bronze bust of Duarte atop a stone pedestal sits today at the very summit, next to flagpole that bears the Dominican banner and a cross.
  • In 2003 it was measured by a researcher using GPS technology and it was found to be 3,098 meters (10,164 ft) above sea level.
  • The area has a climate that very few would associate as typical of a Caribbean island, with cool temperatures all year round, going several degrees below freezing during Winter nights.
  • There is a well-maintained system of trails leading up to the summit, with trailheads at several locations.
  • The trail is 23.1 km (14.4 miles) to the summit, with a total elevation change of 1,977 meters (6,486 ft), and a shelter 5 km (3 mi) away from the summit.
  • Pico Duarte also has a twin summit that is called La Pelona, only 2 meters lower, separated by a col that's about a mile long.

Also, be sure to visit the New Horizon's Youth Ministry website for open positions. We continue to search for individuals to compliment our ministry efforts. The Counseling Department is especially in need of a male counselor as our numbers are rising. Please contact us with questions concerning any of the positions that you are prayerfully considering.

The good de Novo news is that Brian was informed today that he passed the national exam (NCE) for NC licensing! GOD is TRULY good! Brian did very well on the exam eventhough he realized shortly into testing (3 hrs. & 45 mins.) that he had studied the wrong material. ;o( Oh, and this wasn't God...give me a break!

Thank you for all your prayers and support. God has once again shown His face in the DR! We give Him all the praise and glory for the work He continues to do with us in lives of the teens we serve.
